An Independence boy got a special treat at the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo in Coffeyville on Sunday night.
Logan Loomer got to ride in one of the trucks at the Monster Truck Show at Walter Johnson Park on August 13.
The twelve-year-old boy is a big fan of monster trucks and owns a collection of monster truck toys.
And when Greg Doub, a friend of his parents Doug and Dala Loomer, hooked him with Luke Carr, a volunteer with the Inter-State Fair, for Logan to ride in the opening, Logan was thrilled. “He was excited, to say the least,” Dala said. “Waiting for tonight, he kept telling me, we need to hurry, we need to hurry.”
Logan, who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy three years ago, uses a wheelchair to get around, and was delighted with his ride. He watches monster trucks on television at home, but had never attended a show.
He will be a seventh grade student at Independence Middle School this week, and in his spare time, enjoys playing with Legos and playing the banjo.
Six members of Logan’s family were in attendance at the Monster Truck show: his parents, Doug and Dala, his grandmother Ruth Oliver, and his aunt Angela Delano and her daughter and son-in-law Jessie and Brandon Howland, all of Independence. Logan hopes to come back to one more night of the fair and rodeo, with his older sister, Emily, who is sixteen.
Five monster trucks entertained a full crowd in Coffeyville: Rich Blackburn, Aberdeen, N.J., in the truck Viper; Jack Brown, De-Lamb, Fla. in Xtermigator; Jeff Gotwald, Knoxville, Tenn. in Illuminator; Denver Echternkamp, Quincy, Ill. in Venom, and Buddy Tompkins, Daytona Beach, Fla. in Razin’ Cane. They raced, did wheelie championships, donut races, and freestyle. Lawn mower races and tough truck races provided added entertainment.
The Grandstand Jam is the entertainment at the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo on Monday, August 14. Country duo LOCASH will perform; Caney native and country music artist Jared Daniels will open for them. Gates open at 5:30 pm; the show starts at 6:30 pm.
