Grand champion market steer at the 2017 Inter-State Fair in Coffeyville was won by Kailey Hall.
The Welch, Okla. girl won it with her 1,355 lb. steer, a Charolais named Spook.
Spook was a family favorite for the Halls, including her older sister, Paige Hall, and her parents, Billy and Kim Hall. “He’s a family steer,” Kailey said. “We’ve worked our butts off on him as a family. Not just me and my dad, but all of us.” When Kailey wasn’t home, Paige fed and watered him. Mom Kim walked behind him, taking him to the wash rack, and dad was always on deck to help as well.
This is the fourth year the twelve-year-old girl has shown cattle in Coffeyville; this year, she also showed a heifer, named Hazel. The heifer is a Red Angus, which is the breed Kailey prefers, with heifers. With steers, it’s whatever animal works best.
Kailey will be a seventh grade student in Welch this fall, where she loves math class. She plays softball, basketball, runs track, is a cheerleader, and has a 4.0 grade point average.
When she grows up, she’d like to be an optometrist, “and I’ll have cows, for sure.”
She loves showing cattle. “I like cattle because it’s hands-on, and I like steers better than heifers, because it’s way more competitive and a steer is more of a family project,” Kailey said.
She also loves coming to the fair. “I hang out with friends, and I scoop poop,” she joked. “I wash my cattle and I think that’s fun. I like washing cattle.”
Tomorrow is the premium sale, and she and Spook will part ways. It won’t be easy. “It’s going to be sad to see him go,” she said. “I’ll probably cry. I’ve cried every year.” She gets close to her animals. “It’s not like they’re a cow. They’re part of the family. They get treated like it, too.”
But there’s a sure cure for the tears: next year’s steer, and her 2018 market steer is already at the Hall farm, and he’s named. Sister Paige named him Forrest, after the character in the movie “Forrest Gump.”
Reserve grand champion market steer went to Caitlyn Carnahan, Mound Valley, Kansas.
Today’s market steer show was sponsored by Rockin’ D Ranch, Coffeyville, Kan., and Deer Creek Simmental. The heifer show was sponsored by Coffeyville Livestock Market and Ranch Supply. The judge of the shows was Scott Schaake, West Moreland, Kansas. .
