A Missouri/Iowa team took over the lead in the team roping average after the third night of rodeo in Coffeyville.
Adam Rose, Willard, Mo., and J.W. Beck, Moville, Iowa, had a time of 5.1 seconds on their second steer yesterday, and combined with their time of 6.4 seconds on their first run tonight, moved into the lead with 11.5 seconds on two head.
“We had a good steer tonight,” Rose said. “It’s the steer they won the first round on, so it made our job a lot easier. We just made sure we didn’t get ahead of ourselves, just go and catch the steer.”
The team has roped together for the last year, even though they live six and a half hours apart, and it works well, Rose said. “We both have the same mentality about roping, we both have families, we both have wives that run barrels, and our kids are about the same age.”
Rose’s wife Lacinda is a barrel racer, as is Robin Beck, J.W.’s wife. Lacinda competed in Coffeyville and is ranked second in the Great Lakes Circuit, pro rodeo’s regional designation of rodeos in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Kentucky. Lacinda Rose is ranked first in the Great Lakes barrel racing rankings; Beck is ranked sixteenth.
Adam and J.W. are currently ranked second in the Great Lakes Circuit team roping, but have traded back and forth all summer with the number one team, Ryan Von Ahn and Derrick Peterson, who also team roped in Coffeyville this week but did not place.
Their families nearly always travel with them; Adam and Lacinda have three daughters, ages 15, 13, and one, and a son who is three. J.W. and Robin have a son, age six, and a daughter, who is two.
Fast times and high scores in the other events on Friday night include bareback rider Bee Jay Scott, Otley, Iowa (76 points), steer wrestler Jarek Van Petten, Meriden, Kan. (4.5 seconds), tie-down roper L.D. Meier, Texhoma, Okla. (11.2 seconds), saddle bronc rider Luke Long, Nowata, Okla. (69 points), steer roper Danny Taylor, Bryan, Texas (12.7 seconds), barrel racer Cierra Chapman, Kiowa, Okla. (17.57 seconds) and bull rider Kole Bowman, Barnsdall, Okla. (24 points).
The final night of rodeo takes place August 18 at 7:30 pm, along with the last day of the fair. The junior market livestock sale begins at 4 pm, with the carnival starting at 6 pm. Tickets for the rodeo range from $15-$30 and are available online at FairandRodeo.com or by calling 1-800-952-FAIR.
