Makenzie Floyd is a big winner.
The Miami, Okla. girl won grand champion for the market sheep show and champion of the junior sheep showmanship contest at the Inter-State Fair in Coffeyville on August 15.
Floyd, who is thirteen years old, has been showing for the past three years at the Inter-State Fair and also shows at the Craig County (Okla.) fair and the Tulsa State Fair.
She will be in the eighth grade this fall, and will miss the first day of school at Vinita Public School on August 17, which can be good but can be “kind of bad,” she said, because “It’s the first day of school and there’s lots of things to do.”
In school, she is involved in FFA.
Her favorite part of showing sheep is winning, but she’s realistic about competition. “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose,” she said. “It just depends.” Losing “gets you down,” Makenzie said. “But you have to work harder.”
As champion of the junior showmanship, she understands the fundamentals: “keep eye contact with the judge at all times, set your lamb up as fast as you can without rushing it and stressing out, stay calm, and make sure your lamb looks right,” she said. The secret to good showmanship, according to Makenzie? “Work hard. The harder you work, it pays off.”
And after she’s cared for her sheep at the fair, there’s free time to walk around with friends, ride the Ferris wheel, and eat a funnel cake or two.
When she grows up, she’d like to have a career in the medical field.
She has three brothers: Logan Floyd, Jackson Floyd, and Austin Bohannan, and is the daughter of Cassie Jones and Jeff and Tiffany Floyd.
In addition to grand champion and junior showmanship, Makenzie won Hampshire grand champion and reserve champion in all other breeds.
Judge of the day’s sheep shows was Scott Sutton, Uniontown, Kan., and sponsor of the Inter-State Fair Sheep Show was American Homes Realty. Sponsor of the showmanship contest was Hewlett Club Lambs. Complete show results follow.
