Sawyer Richardson will be missing the first day of school on August 17, but he has a really good excuse.
The Vinita, Okla. boy will be at the junior livestock sale at the Inter-State Fair in Coffeyville with his grand champion market barrow.
Richardson, who is thirteen years old, showed the hog on Tuesday, August 14 in Coffeyville.
The barrow, whose name is Broskey, is a crossbred that weighs 240 lbs.
This is the sixth year that Richardson has shown livestock at the Inter-State Fair, and it’s not the only place he’s showed. He and his hogs have traveled this summer to shows in Kansas, Arkansas, Iowa and Illinois. He had two other hogs to show in Coffeyville, a Yorkshire barrow and a spotted gilt.
He lives with his family on a cattle farm, but hogs are his favorite. “I like the work,” he said. “Without them I wouldn’t have much to do.” For his future career, he’d like to be involved with hogs, possibly in swine feed and nutrition.
In school, Richardson plays football, wrestles and runs track, and is excited to be involved in ag classes and FFA this fall. He is on the A-B honor roll.
And after his chores are done at the fair, he loves to hang out with friends, ride the rides, and eat fried pickles and root beer floats.
In addition to grand champion market barrow, Richardson won champion cross breed, champion Yorkshire, reserve champion Spotted Poland China gilt, and champion of the junior showmanship.
He has an older brother, Skyler, and is the son of Joe and Meredith Richardson.
Judge for the hog shows was Jeremy Cantrell, Perkins, Oklahoma. Coordinator of the show was Charlie Cantrell.
