The Junior Advisory Board (JAB) of the Inter-State Fair will hold its annual spring livestock show on April 29.
The Spring Steer and Heifer Jackpot Show will be held at Walter Johnson Park on Coffeyville on Sunday, April 29. Check-in is from 7:30 am to 9 am; the show starts at 10 am, with heifers showing first.
The show is open to 4-H, FFA and breed association members who are 21 or younger as of January 1, 2018.
Buckles will be awarded for the grand steer and grand heifer and for the reserve steer and the reserve heifer. Buckles will also be given for the grand champion junior and senior showmanship contests. Cash prizes will go to breed champions and supreme champion overall.
The show is a fundraiser for the Junior Advisory Board, a group of a dozen high school students who are volunteers with the Montgomery County Fair Association. The group helps with planning and producing the Inter-State Fair and Rodeo and its events.
A portion of the funds from the Spring Jackpot Show will go towards scholarships for JAB members, which will be awarded in August.
The show is a great way for youth to gain experience in showing their heifer or steer before the fairs begin this summer, said Dalton Flatt, a member of the JAB. “It’s a good show for kids to get experience before showing at a county fair or the Inter-State Fair,” he said.
Flatt showed livestock at jackpot shows similar to this one when he was a youth. “This show will open a lot of doors for kids to get involved. That’s one of my passions, showing steers and heifers. These jackpot shows are what ignited the fire inside of me.” Flatt is a resident of Cherryvale and a senior in high school.
The entry fee for the show is $30 per animal and $10 for showmanship. Pre-registration is not required.
