Cheyenne Higbie earned the title of reserve grand champion junior heifer at the 2017 Inter-State Fair’s junior heifer show on Wednesday, August 16.
The fourteen year old girl showed her Simmental heifer, named Black Ice, who also won champion Simmental.
Black Ice, who was born in February of 2016, weighs about 1,300 lbs and was so named because when she was born, she had “this style to her,” Cheyenne said. “She was always black, never had a tint of brown, and she was smooth like ice.”
Black Ice also has quite the personality, according to Cheyenne. “She’s very smart, and she sometimes she thinks she’s a person.” Black Ice will try to eat any human food Cheyenne brings around her, and tries to drink her Gatorade. She also loves to take off her halter. “She gets loose and will be in the barn, but she won’t go anywhere.” Cheyenne has learned that her heifer needs a neck rope; with the neck rope on, Black Ice doesn’t try to remove her halter.
Cheyenne and her family moved from Coffeyville to Princeton, Kansas, this past summer. She is a freshman at Central Heights High School in Richmond, where she plays basketball, has a 4.0 grade point average, and will be a member of FFA this fall. She loves to show cattle and participates in state, regional and national shows.
She showed a prospect steer in Coffeyville and a junior heifer for her parents.
When she grows up, she’d like to be involved in the cattle industry, possibly as a veterinarian assistant or in embryology.
She is the daughter of Heath and Theresa Higbie.
Grand champion for the junior heifer show was Linden Linthicum, Welch, Okla.
Sponsor for the show was Community State Bank. Judge was Scott Schaake-West, Moreland, Kansas.
