Brennon Eldred will drive a long way to get on a good bull.
The Sulphur, Okla. man only had to drive four hours from his home, to get to the Inter-State Rodeo in Coffeyville, Kan., but he’s willing to drive a lot farther to get on a good bull like the one he had in Coffeyville.
He scored 86 points on the Beutler and Son Rodeo bull No. 246 to win the bull ridig title and a check for $1637 in Coffeyville. “That’s a good bull of Rhett (Beutler’s),” he said. “I’d seen him this year and he’s been good every time. Man, we’d drive across the country to get on one like that.” The bull had the advantage for the first few seconds, but not for long. “He had me working the first few rounds, then I got comfortable on him. That’s a great bull. That’s one we love to get on every day of the week.”
Eldred’s been doing plenty of traveling this year, competing in both the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association and the PBR. After his ride on Thursday night in Coffeyville, he headed to Nashville, Tenn., to compete at a PBR Built Ford Tough Series event the next night. He’s doing well in both associations, ranked ninth in the PRCA world standings and twenty-eighth in the PBR Built Ford Tough Series. His goal: qualify for both finals: the PRCA’s National Finals Rodeo in December and the PBR World Finals in October.
It’s not easy. Being tough is part of being a cowboy, and a bull rider. “It’s mentally tough to get through a year in the PRCA and the PBR, or just riding bulls in general,” Eldred said. “Getting to the (National) Finals is the toughest thing to do, mentally and physically. Keep your head right, and take it one bull at a time.”
Eldred works to train his mind, reading books to strengthen it. “Once you can conquer that side of it, I think you can do anything. Anything you set your mind to, you can do it.”
The 22 year-old has qualified for three National Finals Rodeos (2014-2016) and is on the brink of qualifying for his fourth.
In the saddle bronc riding, a cowboy close to Coffeyville took the win.
Chad “Hardy” Braden, Welch, Okla., was 82 points on the Beutler and Son Rodeo bronc named Crossfire for the win and a check for $1631.
He’s ranked fifth in the PRCA world standings, and, like Eldred, is on the cusp of qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo. This will be his first trip to the NFR, where world champions are crowned after its ten days of competition. “It’s a dream come true,” he said. “It’s starting to sink in a little bit.”
Braden’s dad, Butch, worked the Inter-State Rodeo as a pickup man; his mom, Tammy, often works as a timer at rodeos.
Other champions crowned include bareback riders Steven Dent, Mullen, Neb. and Blaine Kaufman, Pretty Prairie, Kan. (79 points each); steer wrestlers Brady McFarren, Henryetta, Okla. and Denver Berry, Checotah, Okla. (9.1 seconds on two head for each cowboy), tie-down roper Cole Bailey, Okmulgee, Okla. (19.3 seconds on two head); team ropers Adam Rose, Willard, Mo. and J.W. Beck, Moville, Iowa (11.5 on two head); steer roper Kelly Casebolt, Lenapah, Okla. (22.3 seconds on two head); and barrel racer Cierra Chapman, Kiowa, Okla. (17.57 seconds).
On Friday night, the 2018 Inter-State Fair and Rodeo queen and princess were crowned. The queen title went to Emily Swiger, the fifteen-year-old daughter of Brian and Carol Swiger. The princess title was won by Emory Keene, the ten-year-old daughter of Jim and Betsy Keene. Swiger lives in Coffeyville; Keene is a resident of Independence.
The dates for the 2018 Inter-State Fair and Rodeo are tentatively set for August 5-12. For complete results from all fair activities, visit the website at FairandRodeo.com.
