Sawyer Richardson will have a delicious supper of smoked barbecue at the Inter-State Fair tonight.
It’s a celebration for him winning intermediate showmanship with his Yorkshire barrow hog.
The Vinita, Okla. boy showed his six month old, 270 lb. barrow named “Na” in Coffeyville during today’s swine show, and won twice with the hog, which also was crowned champion of his breed.
Sawyer has shown pigs for the past four years, and loves it. “It’s just fun,” he said. “It relaxes me.” It’s also taught him dedication and a work ethic. He’s up every morning by 7 am, to feed, water and wash his pigs, which also includes a Duroc. Then they get brushed twice in the morning, twice at night, and walked in the evening, every day of the week.
He will be a sixth grade student at Vinita Public School this fall, where he plays football, wrestles, and is on the honor roll.
He’s finished showing livestock for the week, and after his barbecue meal, will do his favorite thing at the fair: ride the carnival rides.
He is the son of Meredith Richardson and Joe Snedden.
Another pig at the Inter-State Fair has gotten the “royal treatment” all summer.
“Baby”, a 261 lb. Hamp barrow, and his owner, Maddi Gillman, won senior showmanship at the Inter-State Fair’s swine show on Wednesday.
Gillman, a seventeen-year-old from Miami, Okla. said that Baby, her barrow, is special. “He’s probably the biggest baby we have in the barn,” she said. “He’s spoiled. He’s my favorite showmanship pig, definitely.” Baby got special treatment this summer, washings twice a day, and treats – marshmallows – after his walks, “because he does so good.”
Gillman, who has shown livestock at the Inter-State Fair since she was nine years old, started showing sheep three years ago. This year, she challenged herself to show all four species: cattle, sheep, pigs and goats. At the fair this year, she has three pigs, one steer, one goat, and three sheep.
She’s done well with her livestock: in addition to her showmanship title today, she won reserve champion Hamp, and at the Craig County Fair in Vinita in July, she won grand champion hog, grand champion steer, senior showmanship in pigs, goats and cattle, and reserve showmanship in lambs.
Gillman is a senior at Welch (Okla.) High School, where she plays fast pitch and slow pitch softball, basketball, is a cheerleader for football and boys basketball, reporter for her FFA chapter, and a member of the Inter-State Fair’s Junior Advisory Board.
This fall, she will attend Rogers State University in Claremore, Okla., where she will work towards a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
She is the daughter of Bobby and Becky Gillman.
Sponsor of the swine shows at the Inter-State Fair was Zeb Goodwin. Judge for the hog shows today was Brock Herren of El Reno, Okla.
